<hi style=afpcap>Amongst the various French and British designs which the Bolling Commission purchased for the American Expeditionary Force was the S.E.5A. Initially it was intended that Curtiss would mass produce the aircraft, although this plan was not adopted. Instead Curtiss modified and assembled 57 British built airframes. During 1922 and 1923 the Eberhart Steel Products Company rebuilt 50 S.E.5As with Wright-Hispano engines for use as advanced trainers, with the designation S.E.5E.</hi>
